Before You
Leave the House
8 things to do before you go anywhere near the job

The quote is won or lost before you park the van. Tradespeople who prepare properly come across as professional, quote confidently, and waste far less time. Here's your pre-visit checklist.

1
Confirm the appointment in writing
Send a quick message the evening before confirming the time and that you'll be there. It reduces no-shows and makes you look professional before you've even arrived.
Lexi can send this reminder automatically
2
Know what the customer actually asked for
Re-read the original message or enquiry. You want to walk in having already thought about the job, not hearing the details for the first time on the doorstep.
3
Check the address properly
Not just that it exists — check the route, parking, access restrictions, any known issues with the area. Being late because of parking makes a bad first impression.
4
Think about access before you arrive
Will you need to get into a loft, a crawl space, a locked gate, or a basement? Ask the customer in advance. Turning up without the right access wastes everyone's time.
Ask: "Is there anything I'll need access to that might be locked or tricky to get to?"
5
Bring your quoting tools
Tape measure, notepad or phone, camera, torch if needed. If you're quoting manually — bring your template. If you're using Lexi — she's already on your phone.
6
Know your day rate and material costs
Don't turn up not knowing what you charge. Have your standard rates in your head (or in Lexi's price list) so you're not guessing or undercharging on the spot.
7
Look presentable
You don't need a suit. But a clean shirt, a tidy van, and not smelling of last night goes a long way. Customers make judgements in the first 10 seconds.
First impressions are part of your quote
8
Have your business cards or QR code ready
Even if they don't take the job right away, leave them something to remember you by. A QR code that links to your reviews or website is even better than a card.
