How to Win More Jobs

7 habits specifically for builders who want to win more work

Building quotes are often the most complex — multi-stage jobs, materials that swing in price, and customers who've had bad experiences before. These habits will set you apart from every other builder on their list.

1
Quote in stages for larger jobs
Break big projects into phases — groundwork, structure, first fix, second fix, finish. Stage quoting makes the total less terrifying and lets the customer commit incrementally. It also protects you if scope changes.
2
Specify your materials by brand and grade
Don't just write 'bricks.' Write the brand, type, and source. Customers who've been stung before will trust a builder who knows exactly what they're using. It also stops arguments about material quality later.
3
Get architectural drawings before you price
Quoting from photos or descriptions is a gamble. If plans exist, get them. If they don't, recommend a surveyor or architect before committing to a price. Structural surprises are expensive for everyone.
4
Include a contingency clause
No two builds are identical once the ground is broken. Add a clause: 'Any unforeseen structural issues discovered during works will be quoted separately and agreed in writing before proceeding.' This is standard practice. Use it.
5
Be clear about what groundwork is excluded
Foundations, drainage, unexpected rock — be explicit. 'This quote does not include excavation below [X] depth or diversion of existing services' protects you from the jobs that go sideways underground.
6
Show your method, not just your price
Builders who explain how they'll do it win more than those who just say how much. A short paragraph on your approach, sequence, and quality controls reads like experience — because it is.
7
Ask about planning permission early
Has planning been approved? Is building regulations sign-off required? Who is responsible for obtaining them? Clarify this at quote stage, not mid-build. Delays due to missing permissions cost you money too.
