7 habits specifically for painters who want to win more work

Painting is one of the most visual trades — customers know immediately whether they like what they see. That means your quote needs to be as well-presented as your finished work. These habits separate the painters who are always booked from the ones who are always chasing.

1
Specify the paint brand, product, and number of coats
Don't just write 'gloss woodwork' or 'emulsion walls.' Write the brand (Dulux, Farrow and Ball, Crown), product name, and whether it's one coat or two. A customer comparing quotes can't compare fairly if you don't specify. And you're protected if they ask why the finish differs from a competitor.
2
Quote prep work as a separate line
'Preparation of surfaces including filling, sanding, and priming: £X. Painting: £Y.' Customers often underestimate how much prep is in a good paint job. Separating it out justifies your price and shows you're doing it properly.
3
Photograph the walls before you start
Every time. Cracks, existing paint chips, damp patches, screw holes. If you didn't put it there, prove it before you start. One photo now saves a very awkward conversation at the end.
4
Clarify who supplies the paint
You or the customer? If the customer supplies it, state clearly: 'This quote assumes paint is supplied by the customer to the agreed specification. Any additional coats required due to unsuitable paint will be charged at £X per hour.' This is a genuine risk. Protect yourself.
5
Include a colour consultation in your pitch
Even a 10-minute conversation about colour, finish (matt, silk, eggshell, satinwood), and sheen level differentiates you from a painter who just shows up and paints. Customers remember the painter who helped them make a better decision.
6
State what happens with furniture and floor covering
Will you move furniture? Do you cover floors? Is that included? Be specific: 'This quote includes laying dust sheets on all floors and moving small items of furniture. Large furniture must be cleared by the customer prior to commencement.'
7
Show your finish standard with photos
Include two or three photos of recent finished work in your quote email, or link to a Facebook or Instagram page. Painting is a visual trade. Let your work speak for you before the customer has even met you.
